Phaseolus lunatus, noun, the scientific name for the lima bean, a legume grown for its edible seeds, which is also known as butter bean, sieva bean, or Madagascar bean. It is a native legume grown for its edible beans or seeds in Central and South America. The Latin name "lunatus" comes from its half lunar shape. It is mainly cultivated in tropical regions. The Phaseolus lunatus plant is a climbing vine that produces curved pods with usually 5-15 cm long, containing the seeds and can be a perennial twining vine or an herbaceous bush but is usually grown as an annual. It has small, white, pale green, or rose-violet flowers. There are many cultivars, including wild and cultivated forms, which are classified based on seed characteristics. The dried vines, leaves and empty pods left after the harvest can used as fodder.
