Demand Planning

The Demand Planning Process

To set up an effective demand planning framework, consider these core steps:

  • Data Collection. Gather historical sales data, seasonal trends, and market intelligence.
  • Forecasting. Utilize forecasting software and statistical models to predict future customer needs.
  • S&OP (Sales and Operations). Align sales forecasts with your warehouse capacity and procurement capabilities.
  • Execution. Pass the finalized demand numbers to inventory management and transportation teams to begin routing and stocking.

Best Practices and Tools

  • Technology. Utilize Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and dedicated demand planning software to automate calculations and integrate real-time data.
  • Collaboration. Maintain constant communication with both retail/sales channels and freight carriers to adjust plans quickly.

Short-term or long-term planning

The main difference between short-term and long-term planning horizons is tactical execution versus strategic investment. Short-term horizons manage daily operations, while long-term horizons guide capacity and business growth.

Short-Term Horizons (Weeks)

  • Focus. Immediate operational execution.
  • Goal. Match daily supply with current demand.
  • Key Tasks. Scheduling warehouse shifts, dispatching trucks, and replenishing store shelves.
  • Data Used. Recent sales trends, open purchase orders, and live inventory levels.
  • Impact. Direct control over stockouts and immediate freight costs.

Long-Term Horizons (Months/Years)

  • Focus. High-level corporate strategy.
  • Goal. Build infrastructure and scale network capacity.
  • Key Tasks. Negotiating annual carrier contracts, building warehouses, and purchasing fleet vehicles.
  • Data Used. Macroeconomic trends, market growth projections, and historical yearly data.
  • Impact. Structural cost management and business scalability.

Software

We help you select, integrate, or optimize the right software in that companies in the logistic industry typically rely on to manage demand, execution and business operations. In fact, there are three main types of software:

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

  • SAP S/4HANA: Best for global corporations needing massive scalability and deep supply chain integration.
  • Oracle NetSuite: Ideal for fast-growing, mid-sized businesses wanting cloud-based financial and inventory tracking.
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365: Great for companies looking for flexible customization and seamless Microsoft Office integration.

Supply Chain Planning (SCP) & Advanced Planning Systems (APS)

  • Kinaxis RapidResponse: Built for real-time demand planning and rapid scenario simulation during disruptions.
  • o9 Solutions: Uses AI to connect market knowledge with operational forecasting.
  • Blue Yonder: Combines machine learning with historical data for highly accurate retail and manufacturing forecasts.

Execution Software (WMS & TMS)

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS): Tools like Manhattan Associates or Körber track exact inventory locations.
  • Transportation Management Systems (TMS): Tools like SAP TMS or e2open handle short-term truck routing and carrier scheduling.
